Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is the Founder of the Transcendental Meditation Program.
Maharishi first introduced Transcendental Meditation Technique to the west in the 1950’s. Considered by many people to have been the greatest spiritual teacher in recent history, Maharishi dedicated his life to reviving the ancient Vedic traditions of India.
Before Maharishi, experience of higher states of consciousness was considered an abstract esoteric field available only to monks and spiritual recluses. When Maharishi introduced Transcendental Meditation, he introduced for the first time, a systematic and scientifically validated way to transcend (experience samahdi, the deepest level of the mind).
Maharishi was unique among spiritual teachers because he insisted that scientists should review all his programs for self development. He was always confident that research would eventually demonstrate these techniques would be the most useful for health and well-being.
Over 600 scientific studies on the Transcendental Meditation Programme have been conducted during the past four decades by researchers at more than 200 independent research institutions in 30 countries. These include Harvard Medical School; Princeton University; Stanford Medical School; University of Chicago; University of Michigan Medical School; University of California at Berkeley; University of California at Los Angeles; York University, Canada; University of Edinburgh, Scotland; University of Lund, Sweden; University of Groningen, The Netherlands; University of New South Wales, Australia; Institut de la Rochefoucauld, France; National Institute of Industrial Health, Japan; and Moscow Brain Research Institute of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Russia.
A Spiritual Movement to Enlighten the World
Maharishi’s original goal was to create a spiritual regeneration movement to enlighten the world. He was also dedicated to creating world peace, and on many occasions organized large gatherings of meditators in order to create coherence and prevent or lesson world disasters.
Maharishi During the Cold War
In 1983 Maharishi organized a group of 7000 sidhas (meditators who also practice the TM Sidhi Program) in Fairfield, Iowa in the United States. This was the first time such a large group of meditators had been organized in the western world.
The purpose of the meditation conference was to demonstrate the ability for a large group of Sidhas meditating together to influence world events, and create peace.
It was not known at the time, but while Maharishi’s 7000 group was coming together the world was in eminent danger of nuclear destruction from a secret cold war crises know to today as “Able Archer 83”. People today now believe that Maharishi knew the world was in great danger and saved us from a world disaster.
